Black and White Wedding Dresses

Bridesmaids can easily wear all-black dresses without giving your wedding a dark appearance. If you do this, though, make yourself the only one wearing white. Shop for a starkly white wedding dress. A modern sheath or A-line dress compliments this look the best.

If you want to incorporate more of both colors into your wedding, consider having the bridesmaids wear black and accent their dresses with white. This can be done with ribbons. Wrap a ribbon around the waist and tie it in a bow or have the ends drape down the dress. An alternative to white ribbons would be ribbons with stripes or polka dots, depending on your wedding theme. If you want to add some sparkle to the dress, join the ribbon with a diamond clasp. Correlating with the bridesmaids, your white dress can have a black ribbon around the waist.

An elegant option for the bride’s dress would be the traditional white gown with black lace accents added. This could simply be across the bodice or scattered throughout the dress in different patterns. If your dress has a train, black can easily be added as lace or a solid fabric.

Your dress could also be white and have black lace in the skirt pleats. The reverse look can work for the bridesmaids, as well: their black dresses can be accented with white lace.

Another option for a bride is to wear a simple white gown and add a small, lacy black cape. This works especially well with strapless dresses and adds a striking but elegant look. For a classy statement, style your hair by pulling it up in a high ponytail, securing it with a strand of diamonds. Complement this with further diamond accessories, such as a diamond cuff and earrings.

For shoes, forget the usual white—wear black sandals for an added effect. Not only do they pair perfectly with your colors, but you have a versatile pair of shoes to keep wearing long after the wedding.

Keep in mind that shopping for bridesmaid dresses does not have to be limited to wedding shops. Look through your favorite stores (such as Anthropologie, White House Black Market, or New York & Company) for functional dresses a little different than the norm but still just as effective and beautiful. It is definitely a way to make your wedding look your very own.
